Mother, wife, and registered dietitian nutritionist with a passion for helping families. I love all things food: eating it, talking about it, studying it and helping others enjoy it more.
Growing up I saw first-hand the impact food problems can have, not only on the individual but also the whole family. My brother really struggled with eating much of his childhood and it impacted our family dynamics as well as his ability to engage in everything from sports to social gatherings. Eventually, between addressing some of the health issues and changing how we approached meals, things began to change. Although the change was slow, the difference was dramatic. Mealtimes became enjoyable again and my brother grew to become comfortable and confident in navigating eating in a variety of settings.
After graduating high school, I had the privilege of working as a live-in nanny for a family from another country. They opened my world to food, flavors and a rhythm around meals unlike anything I had tried before. I experienced the joys and frustration of cooking for kids and felt the impact those meals had on their behavior. During that time I developed a love for all things food: cooking, eating and studying its impact on our bodies and minds. These two experiences led me to pursuing a degree in nutrition. I wanted to help others enjoy life enhanced by good food instead of limited by food issues.
I now have two children of my own and get to daily experience the joys and frustrations of feeding my family while juggling the other responsibilities of parenting, supporting my husband in his work and running a business.
I received my Bachelors of Science degree in Nutrition and Dietetics from Kansas State University and completed an intensive 11 month internship through the Mayo Clinic's School of Health Sciences. During my internship I discovered that the fast-paced hospital based nutrition and education was not my style: I wanted to truly get to know the people I was working with and help them reach their goals -not just impart knowledge. After passing my registration exam, I worked as a dietitian and diabetes educator at a excellent small town hospital in rural Iowa. There I developed my educational and counselling skills through continuing education, becoming a certified diabetes care and education specialist, community speaking engagements and lots of trial and error with my patients. By the time I left, my outpatient appointments had doubled and I had a reputation in the community as someone who cared about people. We moved to the beautiful lake country of northern Minnesota in 2022 and I opened my private practice in 2023.
